Title: “Surveillance and Privacy in Science Fiction”

Description: Talk by (University of Arizona English Prof.) Scott Selisker considers how science fiction in the 20th and 21st centuries has dealt with themes surrounding surveillance and privacy. With several brief examples (and certainly including Orwell!), he’ll discuss how successive generations of science fiction authors have considered the social consequences of new media technologies for social life. With asides on privacy law and the recent history of media technologies, this talk will consider science fiction’s techniques for plotting surveillance, and what science fiction can tell us about how and why we value privacy.
