Title: “Challenges of Writing Hard SF”
Description: What challenges does writing hard SF present to the writer that other forms of SF do not? Do those challenges come from advances in science, or from writing about science convincingly without losing either reader interest or plot plausibility? Nancy Kress has taken on these questions with novels involving physics, genetic engineering, and (more tentatively and with trepidation) AI. She shares her insights on meeting the requirements of this rewarding form of SF.
Profile: Nancy Kress is the author of thirty-four novels, four story collections, three books on writing fiction, and over 100 short stories. Her science fiction has won six Nebulas, two Hugos, a Sturgeon, and the John W. Campbell Memorial Award. Most of her work concerns genetic engineering; however, her most recent full-length work is Observer (2023), a hard-SF novel written with Dr. Robert Lanza, about quantum mechanics and the nature of consciousness.
