DESCRIPTION:Community\, Resistance & the Catholic Worker \nTalk & discussion with Catholic Workers Mark Colville & Martha Hennessy (granddaughter of Dorothy Day)\nSunday\, September 20\n2 p.m.\nSouthside Presbyterian Church Kiva\, 317 W. 23rd St.\, Tucson  \nThrough their talks around the country\, Mark and Martha are seeking to renew a collective understanding of the Catholic Worker charism\, as Catholic Worker houses of hospitality across the country interface locally with the present-day realities of christo-fascism\, the criminalization of homelessness in their neighborhoods and municipalities\, and the Catholic Church’s effort to canonize Dorothy Day.  \nThey write: Our purpose is to incite a movement-wide discernment over these and other themes\, using the “Aims And Means” as a starting point. (Note: “The Aims and Means of The Catholic Worker” which was originally penned by Dorothy in 1940\, is commonly identified as a sort of mission statement or manifesto for the movement\, yet it has not been substantially updated since the late 1980s.)  Through engaging in our traditional practice of “the clarification of thought through roundtable discussions”\, we wish to lift up the wisdom of those who are presently engaged in this holy work of hospitality and nonviolence\, including their allies and networks of support\, as collectively we consider what God and the times are inviting us to embrace… and to resist. \nSponsored by Casa Maria Catholic Worker and the Nuclear Resister \nMartha Hennessy\, seventh grandchild of Dorothy Day\, divides her time between the family farm in Vermont and practicing the works of mercy at Maryhouse Catholic Worker in New York City.\nShe is 71\, a retired occupational therapist\, and grandmother of nine. She has been imprisoned for protesting war and nuclear power/weapons\, the use of drones\, and the torture of prisoners in Guantanamo and US prisons. Martha travels and speaks on the current topics of her Catholic faith\, her grandmother Dorothy Day’s life\, work in community\, Catholic Social Teaching\, war and peace\, nuclear abolition\, and peacemaking efforts in the tradition of the Catholic Worker movement.  \nMark Colville is a resident member (since 1994) of the Amistad Catholic Worker in New Haven\, Connecticut. He currently spends a good deal of time doing leadership development and community organizing\, both in the streets of New Haven and on its margins\, with the Unhoused Activist Community Team (U-ACT). Along with his partner\, Luz Catarineau\, Mark is also a co-creator of Rosette Neighborhood Village\, an autonomous backyard encampment and tiny homes village for unhoused neighbors located on the grounds of the Amistad house of hospitality (watch the pbs documentary here: https://www.pbs.org/show/where-then-shall-we-go/).

DESCRIPTION:Peace Vigil at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base\, Craycroft Road entrance (details below)\nSeptember 22\, Tuesday\, 7:00 – 8:00 a.m. (Campaign Nonviolence Week of Actions vigil – https://paceebene.org/action-week)   \nPlease note: Signs and banners will be provided\, or you can bring your own.\nSo that our messaging is clear and consistent to passersby (especially drivers who have just a couple of seconds to read a few of our signs)\, we ask that the message on any signs you bring affirms the purpose and focus of our peace vigils noted below.\nThank you. \n \nThe peace vigils are a regular\, nonviolent presence in our community\n* to call for an end to wars and occupations waged by our government in our name and with our tax dollars *\n* to take a stand against war profiteering *\n* to remember the victims of war (including those killed by drones) *\n* to join others around the world in working for peace * \n* Peace vigils at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base\, Craycroft Road entrance (at Golf Links Road) \nWhy protest at Davis-Monthan AFB? \nDRONES:\nAir National Guard troops at Davis-Monthan AFB place Tucson squarely on the global battleground\, by remotely piloting UAV’s (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) that are firing guided bombs and missiles and killing more civilians than targeted “terrorists” in unnamed sovereign nations.  Ground the Drones! \nDEPLETED URANIUM:\nA-10 warplanes that train out of Davis-Monthan AFB are responsible for the vast majority of radioactive ammunition – estimated at well over 400 tons – used in Iraq in 1991 and 2003-2005.\nA recent analysis of targeting data reveals that the toxic ammo was used well beyond its armor-piercing design\, and was used again in Syria in military operations against ISIS in 2015.\nIraq is littered with high levels of nuclear and dioxin contamination\, including depleted uranium\, resulting in greater rates of cancer and birth defects near sites.
