DESCRIPTION:The National Writers Union will be hosting a reading and open mic on Monday\, August 17\, starting at 6:00 p.m. at 2955 E. Broadway in Tucson.  \nThis month our featured reader will be John Washington\, an award-winning investigative journalist with Arizona Luminaria\, where he covers Tucson\, Pima County\, criminal justice\, and the environment\, and who has additionally written for the Atlantic\, The Washington Post\, The Nation\, The Intercept\, and other outlets  \nJohn recently launched his latest book\, How to Close a Camp: Dispatches from the Fight Against Immigrant Detention (Chicago: Haymarket Books)\, described as “an urgent polemic and practical guide to dismantling the immigrant detention system.” It is about the growing Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention-camp system under the Trump Administration and how some opponents rejected these camps and have been fighting back against them—and winning.  \nThe open mic is for spoken word only\, but is open to all forms of spoken word (fiction\, essays\, poetry\, articles\, polemics\, etc.). So bring something to read! \nThe event will be held at the UFCW Union Hall at 2955 E. Broadway. This is on the north side of Broadway\, immediately west of the large and fancy Chase Bank\, which is on the northwest corner of Broadway and Country Club Road. Parking and entry are from the rear. \nHope to see you there!
