I want to rise and to push everything up with me as I go…”\nEsperanza Quintero from the film Salt of the Earth \nOn March 8\, 1857\, women and girls\, many of them immigrants\, in the textile and garment industry in New York City went on strike\,  marching to protest low wages\, 12-hour days\, and inhumane and unsafe working conditions. Although the police broke up the demonstration\, the event is recognized as a pivotal\, early strike by women; helping to inspire decades later\, the celebration of International Women’s Day\, originally known as International Working Women’s Day. International Women’s Day—celebrated worldwide—began as a holiday to recognize the contributions of working women in the fight for organized labor as well as the fight against child labor\, suffrage\, and the fight for equal pay. March 1974 marked the formation and founding of the Coalition of Labor Union Women(CLUW). Formed in Chicago  by 3000+ members from 58 unions to address issues like pay equity\, sexual harassment\, childcare and family leave\, as well as sexism and discrimination within the unions and labor  movement itself\, CLUW\, and women leaders in the labor movement\, continue to play a pivotal role in the struggle for gender equality. SUMMARY:Creating a Culture of Peace Facilitator Training Sponsored by St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church
DESCRIPTION:St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Tucson Arizona will sponsor Creating a Culture of Peace facilitator training on March 6-8\, 2026. This training will be facilitated by Barbara Gessner and Daniel Petersen-Snyder. Anyone who has taken the Creating a Culture of Peace basic training and wants to help others improve their ability to make nonviolent personal and social change may register to take part in this training. \nThe training reviews the content of the basic training; particularly how each module builds on the previous ones and informs those that follow leading to the development of concrete actionable plans to bring about change.  Emphases is placed on the process which calls for a wide range of skills in order to utilize the many teaching tools used in the training. However\, most of the focus of training is on enhancing the participants facilitation skills.   \nEmphasis is placed on the collaborative nature of the training and on creating a safe learning environment. Skills explored include understanding and handling group dynamics\, noticing – both individual responses to events and ideas\, group interactions and exchanges\, and mood or “tone”-  eliciting input through open ended questions\, follow up\, seeking clarification and active listening. \nThe opening\, each module\, and closing are all reviewed through the lens of skill development. Participants are asked to imagine the kind of facilitator that they want to be and to revisit that and reflect on it periodically.  \nHow modules are introduced\, presented and reviewed is addressed from selection of openings\, presentation of content\, eliciting input and summing up.  Participants plan and present one of the modules. Finally\, there is group review of the process of this training\, another opportunity to reflect on growth that has occurred and growth that is planned for\, and individual meetings with the facilitators.  \nAs with the basic training the process is engaging\, collaborative and fun. You will work and learn together with other participants\, develop relationships\, and make friends. \nWe ask that you commit to the entire process and to valuing and practicing active nonviolence. There will be a small fee for the training to cover meals and materials. DESCRIPTION:* Peace Vigil at Raytheon\, Nogales Highway at Hermans Road\nMarch 3\, Tuesday\, 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.  \nJoin the Raytheon Peacemakers as we demonstrate against war and those who profit from it.\nSurvival demands better ideas\, not better weapons.  \nIn April\, 2020 the Pentagon named Raytheon in Tucson as the sole-source contractor for a multi-billion dollar program to develop and produce the Long-Range Stand-Off (LRSO) missile\, an all-new nuclear-armed cruise missile to be launched from the wings of warplanes. Production of this missile violates the spirit and letter of the 2017 United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons\, which entered into force in January 2021.  \nThe wars in Ukraine\, Palestine and elsewhere have brought millions of dollars in new contracts for Raytheon weapons. Weapons and endless war are Raytheon’s business model. It’s commerce\, not defense\, and all about profit\, not security.  \nNow simply called Raytheon\, it is the most profitable division of the corporate war profiteer Raytheon Technologies\, RTX.com. Park on the gravel off northbound Nogales Highway\, between railroad tracks and highway\, (closer to the highway than the railroad tracks) north of Hermans Road.  \nSAFETY \nThere are many cars turning off Old Nogales Highway from both directions onto Herman’s Road to go to work\, some at a pretty fast clip. People will need to carefully cross Hermans Road with the crossing light at the crosswalk in order to vigil on the south side of Hermans Road. \nAdditionally\, we should take care to not stand in the road\, and to keep our signs\, banners and flags from hanging over the road\, so we don’t create any danger to ourselves or others.
