SUMMARY:Call to Organizations and Individuals to Help Rebuild a Broad-based Peace Coalition in Tucson
DESCRIPTION:Calling all interested local organizations and individuals to meet and discuss rebuilding a broad-based peace coalition in Tucson. Let’s get together: \nTuesday\, April 14th at 7:00 pm\n@ Salt of the Earth Labor College\n1902 E. Irene Vista \nBackground: When the US went to war against Serbia in 1999 the local peace movement was unprepared so it took time to build the peace coalition that had died out after the Gulf war. We called our coalition the Tucson Peace Action Coalition (TPAC). When the war was over\, we kept the coalition alive even though we had shrunk to just a few activists. By keeping it alive we were prepared for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq\, especially Iraq. We were able to expand the coalition quickly and organize massive rallies and actions. Our largest march and rally brought out 6000 participants\, and more if you counted dogs and cops. It was sponsored by 40 local groups. I believe that the actions we took combined with huge demonstrations across the country and the world came close to preventing the war. We failed in that\, but kept the pressure on for several years. When I stepped back from leading the coalition\, nobody stepped forward to call meetings and the coalition stopped meeting. \nIt’s time to regroup\, with new leadership and the new energy coming from the anti-MAGA movement and the movements against Israeli aggression. We don’t need to use the same name or the same tactics\, but we need a broad coalition to be effective. \nFor more information about this meeting\, please contact me at (520)235-0684 or stelnik@webtv.net.\nJoe Bernick\nPeace activist since 1964

SUMMARY:Cyclovia Tucson
DESCRIPTION:Living Streets Alliance is pleased to announce the Spring 2026 Cyclovia Tucson event which will take place on Sunday\, April 12th\, 2026. From 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM\, the car-free route will connect communities between Downtown and Amphitheatre Neighborhood. \nDuring the 24th Cyclovia Tucson event\, over three miles of local streets will be temporarily transformed into linear parks and block parties connecting an expected 50\,000 people to local businesses\, neighborhoods\, organizations\, and each other. People of all ages and abilities are invited to walk\, bike\, skate\, roll\, play\, explore\, and learn during this free event. \nThis Spring\, Cyclovia will extend a familiar route along 4th and Fontana Avenues—last activated in Fall\, 2023—to include new partners and activation. The route features Tucson’s very first Bicycle Boulevard: the 4th Ave/Fontana corridor\, running from University Boulevard to Prince Road. With traffic calming features where native plants flourish\, push-button crossings\, and bike-lane markings\, these lower-stress streets have served as a proof of concept for several other bike boulevards that now connect Tucson neighborhoods\, and that can be used year-round. \nThe 24th Cyclovia Tucson event is made possible with support from numerous partners and sponsors\, including AARP\, Pima County Attractions and Tourism\, Visit Tucson\, Pima County Department of Environmental Quality’s Clean Air Program\, The Gloo Factory\, Tap & Bottle\, KXCI\, Dragoon Brewing Co. and Pueblo Vida Brewing Co. \nAs part of the global “open streets” movement\, Cyclovia Tucson is a unique opportunity for people of all ages to envision a city with safer\, more sustainable mobility options for everyone\, amidst thriving and enjoyable public spaces. Over 100 local organizations\, including a wide range of businesses and community groups\, along with diverse Tucson residents of all ages and abilities participate in the temporary transformation of our streets into car-free spaces where freedom of movement and connection are centered. There are many ways to get involved\, including volunteering\, sponsorship and underwriting\, performing\, or setting up an activity on the route. \nLearn more and register to participate at www.cycloviatucson.org.Cyclovia Tucson is a program of Living Streets Alliance (LSA)\, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to transform our streets into vibrant public places that bring people together and provide safe\, accessible\, and attractive transportation options. LSA is increasing healthy\, dignified\, sustainable transportation in Tucson through outreach\, education\, and advocacy. For more information visit www.livingstreetsalliance.org.
