SUMMARY:National Writers Union Reading and Open Mic\, with Peter Bourque
DESCRIPTION:The National Writers Union will be hosting a reading and open mic on Monday\, June 15\, starting at 6:00 p.m. at 2955 E. Broadway in Tucson. \nThis month our featured reader will be Peter Bourque\, who will be reading from and discussing his recently published book\, A Path Wide and Narrow\, A Memoir (2025). Peter\, who grew up in an intensely Catholic working-class family in Flint\, Michigan and graduated from the University of Michigan (English)\, has lived in Tucson since 1978. After graduating from college\, he spent 27 months in the Peace Corps in Ivory Coast\, where he met his wife Suzy\, and then directed the Tucson Hunger Action Center from 1981 to 1986 before returning to West Africa (Mali). He finally settled in as a high school English and French teacher\, participating in the Fulbright Teacher Exchange to the French island of Guadeloupe in 2001-02. Since 2009\, he has taught English as a volunteer through Literacy Connects. \nPath is his second book\, having published Tarnished Ivory\, Reflections on Peace Corps and Beyond in 2011. A Path Wide and Narrow offers a blend of autobiographical details and thoughtful insights on subjects including religion\, parenting\, guns\, and the author’s experience of sustaining a spinal cord injury in 2019 that resulted in paraplegia. In his presentation\, he additionally hopes to address the issues of “voice”; the inclusion and exclusion of information; deadlines; distribution; and the joys and disappointments of reactions to the book. \nThe open mic is for spoken word only\, but is open to all forms of spoken word (fiction\, essays\, poetry\, articles\, polemics\, etc.). So bring something to read! \nThe event will be held at the UFCW Union Hall at 2955 E. Broadway. This is on the north side of Broadway\, immediately west of the large and fancy Chase Bank\, which is on the northwest corner of Broadway and Country Club Road. Parking and entry are from the rear. \nThere will not\, unfortunately\, be a Zoom option this month.

SUMMARY:SPEAK and Revolutionary Grounds Books & Coffee present the 1990 March for the Animals Chronicle
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, 6/10/26 5 P.M. – 7 P.M. \nEvent/issue: 36th anniversary presentation: 1990 March for the Animals Chronicle\nLocation: Revolutionary Grounds Books & Coffee\nAddress: 4675 E. Speedway Blvd. (east side of Sprouts plaza; shop faces Swan Rd.)\nFilm run-time: 35 minutes\nShowtimes: First show at 5:15 P.M. / Second show at 6:15 P.M.\nSpecial notes: No entry fee! \nAdditional film background & event details:\nHistory was made on Sunday\, June 10\, 1990. On this day\, tens of thousands of compassionate people from throughout the United States assembled in our nation’s capitol to send a message to Congress: “We stand together to ensure justice for animals. Through our collective efforts\, the voice of all other animals finally will be heard.” \nExperience this historic day by way of this non-graphic\, good-for-all-ages documentary of the first-ever march for animal rights in the United States. This major event saw 50\,000 activists converge on Washington\, DC to announce the inception and the strength of the animal rights movement. The 1990 March for the Animals Chronicle is an extremely motivational film that features commentary from many luminaries who have defined our mission: Gary Francione\, Tom Regan\, Cleveland Amory\, Ingrid Newkirk\, Peter Singer\, Neal Barnard\, and others. Several supportive celebrities were also on hand at the march\, such as Berke Breathed\, Belinda Carlisle\, Laura Nyro\, and Grace Slick\, to name a few. Witness activists from every state in the nation\, with each state’s contingency identified and preceded by a state-specific banner. The camera work on this film was phenomenal\, with photographers and interviewers following along the march route so as to provide a close-up perspective and a real-time experience that’s unforgettable. \nSoon after the 1990 march\, the week of June 10th was declared Animal Rights Awareness Week. SUMMARY:Sustainable Tucson’s Sustainability Spotlight: Early Arizona Politics and the Central Arizona Project
DESCRIPTION:Sustainable Tucson’s Sustainability Spotlight\nEarly Arizona Politics and the Central Arizona Project\nWith Julia Fonseca\, Madrean Resources\nTuesday\, June 9\, 6:00-7:15 pm\nOnline \nJoin Sustainable Tucson for our June Sustainability Spotlight\, “Early Arizona Politics and the Central Arizona Project.” Our speaker\, Julia Fonseca\, is a hydrologist\, now consulting as Madrean Resources. She will show how decisions made long ago structure the contemporary debates among the Colorado Basin states today. Her presentation explores early politics internal to Arizona to explain some of our current situation. Knowing early history helps explain why our state took so long to receive and utilize its full share of Colorado River water\, and why users of the Central Arizona Project are so vulnerable to shortages on the river. This presentation will conclude with some information about Arizona’s recent strategies for dealing with shortages. Opportunity for questions will follow. The program will be on Zoom. Find more information and the Zoom link for the meeting on our website (www.sustainabletucson.org) or on our Facebook page or Meetup group.

SUMMARY:Peace Vigil at Raytheon
DESCRIPTION:* Peace Vigil at Raytheon\, Nogales Highway at Hermans Road\nJune 9\, Tuesday\, 7:00 – 8:00 a.m. \nJoin the Raytheon Peacemakers as we demonstrate against war and those who profit from it.\nSurvival demands better ideas\, not better weapons. \nIn April\, 2020 the Pentagon named Raytheon in Tucson as the sole-source contractor for a multi-billion dollar program to develop and produce the Long-Range Stand-Off (LRSO) missile\, an all-new nuclear-armed cruise missile to be launched from the wings of warplanes. Production of this missile violates the spirit and letter of the 2017 United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons\, which entered into force in January 2021. \nThe wars in Ukraine\, Palestine and elsewhere have brought millions of dollars in new contracts for Raytheon weapons. Weapons and endless war are Raytheon’s business model. It’s commerce\, not defense\, and all about profit\, not security. \nNow simply called Raytheon\, it is the most profitable division of the corporate war profiteer Raytheon Technologies\, RTX.com. With its top management and largest factory in Tucson\, Raytheon employs more than 13\,000 of our Southern Arizona friends and neighbors. \nFor more than two decades\, Raytheon has hailed Tucson as the Missile Technology Capital of the World – a center for lethal innovation and cutting-edge killing for profit. From Standard Missiles to Star Wars “kill vehicles” and hypersonic glide bombs\, AMRAAMs and Javelins\, Mavericks and microwave crowd control beams\, drones\, cluster bombs and now\, nuclear-armed cruise missiles – it’s all made here\, some even sold to friends and foes of friends alike. \nhttps://www.salon.com/2018/06/27/raytheons-profits-boom-alongside-civilian-deaths-in-yemen_partner/ \nWe do not oppose those working at Raytheon.\nWe understand the need for good paying jobs in Tucson. \nWe oppose the militarism that exploits this need\, “developing” our own community at the expense of others around the world. \nSigns provided\, or bring your own. More info: (520)323-8697 or nukeresister@igc.org. \n* Parking is on the NORTH side of the Hermans Road entrance to the plant (3rd traffic light south of Valencia on Nogales Highway\, the extension of South 6th Avenue). Park on the gravel off northbound Nogales Highway\, between railroad tracks and highway\, (closer to the highway than the railroad tracks) north of Hermans Road. \nSAFETY \nThere are many cars turning off Old Nogales Highway from both directions onto Herman’s Road to go to work\, some at a pretty fast clip. People will need to carefully cross Hermans Road with the crossing light at the crosswalk in order to vigil on the south side of Hermans Road. \nAdditionally\, we should take care to not stand in the road\, and to keep our signs\, banners and flags from hanging over the road\, so we don’t create any danger to ourselves or others.
