SUMMARY:Steadfast Non-Violent Witness: Stories from the West Bank
DESCRIPTION:Presentation by Delle McCormick about a recent trip to the West Bank during the war with Iran. Reverend McCormick says: \nThis year\, because flights to Tel Aviv were canceled\, I flew into Jordan and crossed the border into the West Bank by land\, which was an experience in and of itself. Most of my time in the West Bank was spent volunteering at the 100-acre Tent of Nations farm and orchard\, owned precariously by the Nassar family. Because of the war with Iran\, most volunteers who had also planned to be there had canceled\, so we were a small international crew. For the first week\, we were only five women in our 60s and 70s! While the US and Israel-backed war with Iran dominated headlines and public debate\, Zionist extremist violence dramatically increased\, with a new Settler outpost being built right on the property line of the farm\, and two Settler watchtowers with bright lights\, cameras\, and listening devices were directed at the farm 24/7. As you might imagine\, while the Nassar family’s commitment is to non-violent steadfast witness\, the farm and family are surrounded by the probability of violence from several directions. \nPlease join me to learn more on May 19\, from 6-7:30 in MacBride Hall at Grace St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. I will also bring beautiful olive wood ornaments\, candle holders\, and earrings that you can purchase for a small price. All proceeds support those I met who are struggling fiercely to survive under increasing state-sponsored and religious extremist violence. \nPlease feel free to share this invitation with others who might be interested and RSVP to revdellemc@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Peace Vigil at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base
DESCRIPTION:Peace Vigil at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base\, Craycroft Road entrance (details below)\nMay 19\, Tuesday\, 7:00-8:00 a.m. \nPlease note: Signs and banners will be provided\, or you can bring your own.\nSo that our messaging is clear and consistent to passersby (especially drivers who have just a couple of seconds to read a few of our signs)\, we ask that the message on any signs you bring affirms the purpose and focus of our peace vigils noted below.\nThank you. \n \nThe peace vigils are a regular\, nonviolent presence in our community\n* to call for an end to wars and occupations waged by our government in our name and with our tax dollars *\n* to take a stand against war profiteering *\n* to remember the victims of war (including those killed by drones) *\n* to join others around the world in working for peace * \n* Peace vigils at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base\, Craycroft Road entrance (at Golf Links Road) \nWhy protest at Davis-Monthan AFB? \nDRONES:\nAir National Guard troops at Davis-Monthan AFB place Tucson squarely on the global battleground\, by remotely piloting UAV’s (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) that are firing guided bombs and missiles and killing more civilians than targeted “terrorists” in unnamed sovereign nations. Ground the Drones! \nDEPLETED URANIUM:\nA-10 warplanes that train out of Davis-Monthan AFB are responsible for the vast majority of radioactive ammunition – estimated at well over 400 tons – used in Iraq in 1991 and 2003-2005.\nA recent analysis of targeting data reveals that the toxic ammo was used well beyond its armor-piercing design\, and was used again in Syria in military operations against ISIS in 2015.\nIraq is littered with high levels of nuclear and dioxin contamination\, including depleted uranium\, resulting in greater rates of cancer and birth defects near sites. See https://www.theguardian.com/world/2010/jan/22/iraq-nuclear-contaminated-sites. \nPark at recreation field parking lot at N-W corner of Craycroft & Golf Links with access from Craycroft. Signs provided\, or bring your own! More info: 323-8697 or nukeresister@igc.org.

SUMMARY:National Writers Union Reading and Open Mic\, Featuring Poet Chelsea Guevara
DESCRIPTION:The National Writers Union will be hosting a reading and open mic on Monday\, May 18\, starting at 6:00 p.m. at 2955 E. Broadway in Tucson. \nThis month our featured reader will be the poet Chelsea Guevara. Chelsea is a fruit metaphor obsessed U.S.-Salvadoran poet and performer from Salt Lake City\, Utah. In 2024\, she won the Womxn of the World International Poetry Slam\, becoming the first Salvadoran and Utahn to win a national individual slam title. Her first full-length poetry collection Cipota\, debuted with Button Poetry in September 2025\, explores the depths and limits of memory\, storytelling as a mode of generational reclamation\, and interpreting the self through periods of transformation. In 2023\, Chelsea’s micro-chapbook Somewhere Over the Border was a finalist for the Gunpowder Press Alta California Chapbook Prize\, and most recently in March 2026\, Chelsea represented the U.S. diaspora in the Latin American regional Slam Abya Yala. As a graduate from the University of Arizona’s Latin American Studies program\, Chelsea utilizes her academic research to inform her creative work centering transnational culture\, family history\, and identity rooted in the Salvadoran diaspora. \nThe open mic is for spoken word only\, but is open to all forms of spoken word (fiction\, essays\, poetry\, articles\, polemics\, etc.). So bring something to read! \nThe event will be held at the UFCW Union Hall at 2955 E. Broadway. This is on the north side of Broadway\, immediately west of the large and fancy Chase Bank\, which is on the northwest corner of Broadway and Country Club Road. Parking and entry are from the rear. \nThere will not\, unfortunately\, be a Zoom option this month.

SUMMARY:Border Wall Resistance: Bi-National Border Happening
DESCRIPTION:Border Wall Resistance\nBi-National Border Happening\, @rally.forthevalley \nSaturday\, May 16\, and Sunday\, May 17.\n11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. \nWhere: Lochiel\, Arizona (La Noria) • GPS: 31°19′59″ N 110°26′38″ W (https://maps.app.goo.gl/ eks2hyNrY5sbS1uE9) \nInformational Flyer About the Binational Border Happening \nThe Madrean Archipelago Wildlife Center https://www.mawcenter.org/ \nThe Border Wall has divided the San Rafael Valley in southern Arizona along international lines. This is catastrophic for wildlife\, who for survival cannot be impeded from migration\, but allowed to move north and south across their habitats freely as they have for millennia. \nSlow-growing\, mature oak trees are being bulldozed and killed without a thought. Irreplaceable Pleistocene-era aquifers\, in a time of unprecedented drought and climate change\, are being drained for cement. Cross-border watersheds are being bulldozed and blocked with immense boulders sourced from blasting our own Coronado Memorial National Park. \nCoils of razor-sharp concertina wire are being laid out ahead of construction\, a dangerous menace to innocent wildlife going about their business of survival in a cruel desert. They treat our lands like a war zone\, but one in which there are few if any combatants. What are the thousands of new border agents doing to police this border? Do we need the absurd extra expense of razor wire? \nNow\, other places we hold dear are being assaulted: Big Bend\, Rio Grande River Valley\, La Lomita\, National Butterfly Center\, Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge\, Jacumba Wilderness\, Cerro Cuchumá— sacred places thoughtlessly targeted in this endless fantasy our government falsely claims is essential to our security. \nWe all knew this was coming when we planned our first Bi-National Border Happening on May 31\, 2025\, a success. The date of this next “happening” lands on National Endangered Species Day\, also under attack by the absurd and reckless actions of a rogue administration hungry for profit and power. \nYou all know what’s happening. We need to summon our collective voices and strengths—do everything we can with everything we have—to fight like hell! This Wall must come down in our lifetimes or we’ll bear the consequences of ECOCIDE! \nWe will be broadcasting live. We will share with the global community—those who believe in and are working for migration as the solemn rite of all living beings. Bring your signs\, songs\, poetry and creative spirit.
