SUMMARY:Cherrie Moraga Lecture; Change of Keynote Speakers for the Raquel Rubio Goldsmith Lecture/Scholarship Fundraiser Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, April 30\, 2026\n11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.\nUniversity Park Marriott\nTucson\, Arizona\nREGISTRATION IS REQUIRED TO ATTEND. REGISTER HERE \nDue to recent\, nationally publicized events\, we have had a change of keynote speakers for the Raquel Rubio Goldsmith Lecture/Scholarship Fundraiser Luncheon. We are excited and proud to announce our new speaker is literary icon\, Cherríe Moraga. \nCherríe Moraga is a highly acclaimed and internationally known Chicana/Mexican American feminist lesbian writer\, poet\, essayist\, playwright\, and cultural activist. She broke onto the national writing scene in 1981 with the landmark text\, This Bridge Called My Back: Writings by Radical Women of Color\, co-edited with another famed Chicana writer\, Gloria Anzaldúa. The text was adopted quickly onto reading lists of Ethnic and Gender Studies programs at universities and colleges across the country and has entered the canon. Her work is also widely used in English\, Writing\, Theater\, and Humanities programs. She has published numerous books and collections\, for which she has won many prestigious awards (please see bios\, below)\, all of which makes her one of the most influential Chicana thinkers and cultural workers today. Throughout her work\, Cherríe Moraga thinks critically about how race/ethnicity\, class\, gender\, and sexuality intersect and interact with each other to critique systems of oppression and to advocate for social justice\, el mero mole of the EGTSS Department and our courses. By accepting our invitation\, we are deeply honored by her solidarity toward our students\, our community\, and Dolores Huerta. We look forward to collectively welcoming Cherríe to our College and our city. \nBios \nhttps://www.poetryfoundation.org/poets/cherrie-moraga \nhttps://www.english.ucsb.edu/people/faculty/moraga-cherrie/ \nRegistration is required to attend. SUMMARY:The Hard-Sci SF Zoom Group proudly presents Feminist SETI Scientist/Artist Bettina Forget
DESCRIPTION:The Hard-Sci SF Zoom Group proudly presents Feminist SETI Scientist/Artist Bettina Forget\non Saturday\, April 4\, @ 9AM \nTITLE: “Are we alone in the Universe? Transforming Data into Experiences” \nDESCRIPTION: Bettina Forget’s creative practice transgresses the boundaries of art and science. Series such as Women With Impact\, Exoplanet Zoo\, and Artifacts from the Future draw inspiration from scientific literature and data\, conversations with researchers\, and her passion for amateur astronomy. Her work with the SETI Institute and her academic research engage with the question\, “Are we alone in the universe?” by challenging anthropocentric perspectives through imagination\, scientific inquiry\, and creative expression. This convergence of disciplines transforms data into experiences and invites deeper reflection on humanity’s place in the cosmos. \nPROFILE: Bettina Forget is the Director of the SETI Institute’s Artist-in-Residence (AIR) program. Her creative practice and academic research examine the re-contextualization of art and science\, and how transdisciplinary education may disrupt gender stereotypes. Bettina works with traditional as well as new media arts\, focusing on astrobiology\, exoplanet research\, sci-fi\, and feminism. Her work has been exhibited internationally including ISEA (Barcelona)\, CYFEST-13 (Saint Petersburg)\, and the Planetarium Rio Tinto Alcan (Montréal)\, and will be presented in 2026 at the Exploratorium (San Francisco) and the Wende Museum (Los Angeles). \nRegister in advance for this meeting: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/3MW8AMnSSjWWK5lzg27tXQ\nNo password

SUMMARY:Nico Lang Will Read from American Teenager\, Which Documents Lives of Trans Kids
DESCRIPTION:Author Reading and Q & A with Nico Lang\non American Teenager: How Trans Kids Are Surviving Hate and Finding Joy in a Turbulent Era\nMarch 14\, 3:00 p.m.\nRincon Congregational UCC\, 122 N. Craycroft Rd. \nNote from the Author: “My name is Nico Lang\, and I’m a longtime LGBTQ+ journalist\, as well as the author of the recently released book\, American Teenager\, which documents the lives of trans kids and their loved ones in seven different states. My goal was to speak back to extreme anti-trans rhetoric about youth by showing trans young people as they actually are: powerfully human. I’ve been touring the country for the past 17 months to bring their voices and stories to as many communities as possible\, and as part of that work\, I’ll be in Tucson on Saturday\, March 14 — for a reading/Q&A at Rincon UCC. The event should start around 3:00pm.”

I don’t want anything lower than I am. I am low enough already. I want to rise and to push everything up with me as I go…”\nEsperanza Quintero from the film Salt of the Earth \nOn March 8\, 1857\, women and girls\, many of them immigrants\, in the textile and garment industry in New York City went on strike\, marching to protest low wages\, 12-hour days\, and inhumane and unsafe working conditions. Although the police broke up the demonstration\, the event is recognized as a pivotal\, early strike by women; helping to inspire decades later\, the celebration of International Women’s Day\, originally known as International Working Women’s Day. International Women’s Day—celebrated worldwide—began as a holiday to recognize the contributions of working women in the fight for organized labor as well as the fight against child labor\, suffrage\, and the fight for equal pay. March 1974 marked the formation and founding of the Coalition of Labor Union Women(CLUW). Formed in Chicago by 3000+ members from 58 unions to address issues like pay equity\, sexual harassment\, childcare and family leave\, as well as sexism and discrimination within the unions and labor movement itself\, CLUW\, and women leaders in the labor movement\, continue to play a pivotal role in the struggle for gender equality. Join us for a panel discussion with Pima Area Labor Federation Chair Cecelia Valdez\, Jobs with Justice Organizer Martha Reyes\, and CLUW Vice President Vonda Wilkins on the pivotal and critical role women labor leaders and rank and file continue to play in the struggle for workers’ rights\, women’s equality\, and building the labor movement.\n——————————————————————————————\nFor more information about Salt of the Earth Labor College please email to SELC@webtv.net or call (520)235-0694 \nWe will be depending on your generosity to keep us going. SUMMARY:Salt of the Earth Labor College Presents: MUTUAL AID AND CLASS STRUGGLE
DESCRIPTION:MUTUAL AID AND CLASS STRUGGLE\nA Community Forum with folks who are involved. \nSunday\, February 22nd\, 4:00 pm (6 pm Eastern)\nSalt of the Earth Labor College\n1902 E. Irene Vista\nIn Tucson’s South Side \nOr by zoom https://us02web.zoom.us/j/4074490617 \nWe’re inviting organizations and individuals involved in providing mutual aid in our community to come share their experiences in this form of resistance. We hope this Community Forum will engender open discussion on whether there is a need and desire for greater cooperation between groups. Whether intended or not\, even small efforts at mutual aid sometimes turn political when authorities interfere or the folks helped need much more than we can provide. How should that be handled? \nFocusing on collective care and solidarity\, mutual aid in the US has a long history as a peer-to-peer survival strategy for marginalized communities ravaged by natural disasters or the cruel excesses of capitalism. From Black Mutual Aid following the American Revolution\, to the Underground Railroad. From Sociedades Mutualistas to the Black Panther free lunch programs. From Unions’ strike support and food and toy drive for furloughed workers to LGBTQIA+ community’s responses to the onset of the AIDs epidemic to grocery delivery to families terrorized by ICE. Mutual Aid not only protects vulnerable communities through provision of essential goods and services but also helps build solidarity and the movement during this critical period of fight back against the growing fascist tendencies of late stage capitalism.\n——————————————————————————————\nFor more information about Salt of the Earth Labor College please email to SELC@webtv.net or call (520)235-0694 \nWe will be depending on your generosity to keep us going. SUMMARY:Salt of the Earth Labor College Presents: CULTURAL WORKERS ROCK THE RESISTANCE
DESCRIPTION:Salt of the Earth Labor College Presents: \nCULTURAL WORKERS ROCK THE RESISTANCE\nWith local cultural activists \nSunday\, February 8th 4:00 pm (6 pm Eastern)\n@ Salt of the Earth Labor College\n1902 East Irene Vista in Tucson \nOr by zoom https://us02web.zoom.us/j/4074490617 \n“Whenever I become discouraged…I lift my spirits by remembering the artists are on our side. Poets and painters. Singers and musicians. Novelists and playwrights. Who speak to the world in a way that is impervious to assault because they wage a battle for justice in a sphere which is unreachable by the dullness of ordinary discourse.” Howard Zinn \n“Politics is useless if it does nothing to enhance the beauty of our lives” In the face of increasingly violent and repressive capitalist aggression on many fronts and daily tragedies it is difficult to avoid falling into despair. It is critical to build a mass culture of resistance that illuminates the rich history and diversity of our working-class movement. This class will focus on the role cultural workers play in witnessing\, documenting\, inspiring collective action\, building our movement\, and helping us to imagine the vibrant\, joyful world we can achieve.\n——————————————————————————————\nFor more information about Salt of the Earth Labor College please email to SELC@webtv.net or call (520)235-0694 \nWe will be depending on your generosity to keep us going.
